Early Life and Education

Albert Einstein was born on March 14, 1879, in Ulm, in the Kingdom of Wurttemberg in the German Empire. He grew up in a middle-class Jewish family in Munich, where his father, Hermann Einstein, ran an electrochemical business. His mother, Pauline Einstein, took care of the family and was a talented pianist. Einstein had a younger sister named Maja.

Einstein showed an early aptitude for mathematics and science. He was a quiet child, and his parents worried about his late development in speech. However, he excelled in school and was particularly gifted in mathematics and physics. At the age of 16, Einstein attempted to enroll in the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich but failed the entrance exam. He continued his education at a Swiss cantonal school in Aarau, Switzerland, where he received his diploma in 1896.

In 1896, Einstein renounced his German citizenship to avoid military service and enrolled at the ETH in Zurich. He studied physics and mathematics and graduated in 1900 with a teaching diploma. Building on the special theory of relativity, Einstein developed the general theory of relativity in 1915. General relativity provided a new understanding of gravity and predicted phenomena such as the bending of light around massive objects.

Quantum Theory and Unified Field Theory

Despite his groundbreaking work in relativity, Einstein had reservations about the implications of quantum theory, famously stating that “God does not play dice with the universe.” He spent the latter part of his career searching for a unified theory that would reconcile the principles of quantum mechanics and general relativity. Unfortunately, he was not able to achieve this goal, and the quest for a unified theory continues to this day.
