Ingredients

  • 1 pound of lasagna noodles
  • 1 pound of ground beef
  • 1 pound of Italian sausage
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 4 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1 can (28 ounces) of crushed tomatoes
  • 1 can (6 ounces) of tomato paste
  • 1/2 cup of fresh basil, chopped
  • 1/4 cup of fresh parsley, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon of sugar
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1/2 cup of butter
  • 1/2 cup of all-purpose flour
  • 4 cups of whole milk
  • 1/4 teaspoon of nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon of salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon of pepper
  • 2 cups of grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 pound of mozzarella cheese, shredded

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Meat Sauce

  1. In a large skillet, cook the ground beef and Italian sausage over medium-high heat until browned, breaking it up with a spoon as it cooks.
  2. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic to the skillet and cook until the onion is soft and translucent.
  3. Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, basil, parsley, sugar, salt, and pepper. Reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer for at least 30 minutes to allow the flavors to meld together.

Step 2: Prepare the Béchamel Sauce

  1. In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat.
  2. Whisk in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes to make a roux.
  3. Gradually whisk in the milk, nutmeg, salt, and pepper. Cook the sauce, stirring constantly, until it thickens enough to coat the back of a spoon.
  4. Remove the sauce from the heat and stir in 1 cup of grated Parmesan cheese until melted and smooth.

Step 3: Cook the Lasagna Noodles

  1. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil.
  2. Cook the lasagna noodles according to the package instructions until al dente.
  3. Drain the noodles and lay them out on a baking sheet to prevent sticking.

Step 4: Assemble the Lasagna

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Spread a thin layer of meat sauce on the bottom of a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  3. Arrange a layer of lasagna noodles on top of the sauce.
  4. Spoon a layer of meat sauce over the noodles, followed by a layer of béchamel sauce and a sprinkle of mozzarella cheese.
  5. Repeat the layers until all the ingredients are used, finishing with a layer of béchamel sauce and a sprinkle of Parmesan cheese on top.

Step 5: Bake the Lasagna

  1. Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake the lasagna for 30 minutes.
  2. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes, or until the top is golden and bubbly.
  3. Let the lasagna rest for 10-15 minutes before slicing and serving.

Step 6: Enjoy Your Authentic Italian Lasagna!

Cut the lasagna into squares, serve on plates, and enjoy the rich, comforting flavors of authentic Italian lasagna straight from your oven. Buon appetito!
