How to Cook Authentic Italian Lasagna from Scratch

Lasagna is a beloved Italian dish that consists of layers of pasta, rich meat sauce, creamy béchamel, and gooey cheese. Making authentic Italian lasagna from scratch is a labor of love, but the end result is always worth the effort. Follow this step-by-step guide to learn how to make a mouthwatering lasagna that will impress your family and friends.

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound of ground beef
  • 1 pound of Italian sausage
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 4 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1 can (28 oz) of crushed tomatoes
  • 1 can (6 oz) of tomato paste
  • 1/2 cup of fresh basil, chopped
  • 1/4 cup of fresh parsley, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon of sugar
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1/2 cup of red wine
  • 1/4 cup of olive oil
  • 1 pound of lasagna noodles
  • 1 pound of ricotta cheese
  • 1 cup of grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 egg
  • 1 pound of mozzarella cheese, sliced
  • 4 cups of béchamel sauce

Instructions:

1. Prepare the Meat Sauce:

In a large pot, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic, and sauté until translucent. Add the ground beef and Italian sausage, breaking them up with a wooden spoon, and cook until browned.

Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, red wine, sugar, basil, parsley, salt, and pepper. Simmer the sauce for at least 1 hour to allow the flavors to meld together. Adjust the seasoning to taste.

2. Cook the Lasagna Noodles:

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Cook the lasagna noodles according to the package instructions until al dente. Drain the noodles and rinse them with cold water to prevent sticking.

3. Prepare the Ricotta Mixture:

In a mixing bowl, combine the ricotta cheese, grated Parmesan cheese, and egg. Mix well until smooth and creamy. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

4. Assemble the Lasagna:

Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). In a large baking dish, spread a thin layer of meat sauce on the bottom. Arrange a layer of lasagna noodles on top, slightly overlapping them.

Spread a layer of the ricotta mixture over the noodles, followed by a layer of mozzarella slices. Repeat the layers of meat sauce, noodles, ricotta mixture, and mozzarella until you reach the top of the dish, finishing with a layer of meat sauce and mozzarella on top.

5. Bake the Lasagna:

Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake the lasagna in the preheated oven for 30 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown.

6. Let it Rest:

Allow the lasagna to rest for 10-15 minutes before slicing. This will help the layers set and make it easier to serve.

7. Serve and Enjoy:

Slice the lasagna into squares and serve hot. Garnish with fresh basil and grated Parmesan cheese, if desired. Enjoy your delicious and authentic Italian lasagna!
